PE - Coach Harrison's Corner

Coach’s Corner
April
Happy Spring! I hope everyone is doing well and is ready for Spring Break! We are in the home stretch of the school year! Parents, if you ever would like to help out and volunteer your time during your child’s PE class AND you have a background check, I would love the help. I could always use an extra pair of eyes–especially for Kinder and 1st grade. My email is below–just reach out and we can set something up.
Update: We recently wrapped up our circuit training and cup stacking units. We also completed our 5th annual cup stacking tournament of champions–results below.
Upcoming: In April, we will begin volleyball. Students will learn basic rules, skills, and vocabulary. Older students will also have the opportunity to practice basic skills, during scrimmage games. I’m hoping that we will have time to spend a little time learning and playing tennis and badminton. We will also be running our ½ mile (Kinder-2nd) and 1 mile run this month. The goal is for students to have a faster time than the beginning of the year.
Announcement:
Fifth Annual Cup Stacking Tournament of Champions results:
Singles:
1st place–4th grader Anthony Renfro
2nd place–4th grader Micah Willeford
Doubles:
1st place–Therese Woods & Liza Yarbrough

I am looking for parent helpers for our upcoming Play Days in May. Please reach out to me if you are able to help with Play Day.

My hope is that students can participate fully and safely, so it is important that your child wears appropriate footwear to PE for the remainder of the year. Thank you families, for your help with this. As always, please send any questions, or concerns my way.
March
Hello Families,
Happy March! Yippee, spring break is around the corner. I hope everyone enjoys the time off.
Update: We are finishing up our circuit training unit. We spent two weeks learning the importance of healthy habits and how to quickly move our bodies for the most exercise. We practiced exercises for all ages that can be done easily, quickly, with little to no equipment.
Upcoming: We will start to find our class winners for our annual cup stacking tournament that will take place right before spring break. During March, we will also learn how to bowl and keep score for bowling.
Announcement: VOLUNTEERS! Mark your calendar–May 22nd! Playday will be here before we know it. I will be looking for many helpers to make this a successful, fun day!
Thanks for the continued support I consistently get from our families and community. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I’m always looking for parent volunteers for my Kinder - 2nd grade classes.
February
Hello Families,
Happy February! I hope everyone has had a fantastic start to this new year! 😀

Next, we will play a game called “knock out” that will help develop some of those basic skills. The older grades will also have the opportunity to play scrimmage games during PE
Upcoming: The month of February we will review healthy choices. We will also spend a week learning about circuit training and how cardio and strength exercises help build our endurance. We will learn exercises that promote a healthy heart. We will end the month playing and reviewing bowling.

Hello Families,

Update: We are finishing up our gymnastics unit, and are currently collecting and analyzing data on the rope climbing portion of the unit. Some students are also racing to the top of the rope to try to be this year’s fastest.
Upcoming: Upon returning from winter break, the first unit will be hockey. The students will learn basic vocabulary and skills specific to hockey. We will also have an assembly on January 14th, and some of the Ice Wolve hockey players will be visiting our school.

December
Hello Families,
Happy Holidays! I can’t believe we are headed into the month of December. If you haven’t signed up your child for SABA winter basketball, good news–it’s not too late. Registration forms are due this month. If you have any questions, you can call the front office.
Update: We are currently in our basketball unit. The students are learning specific basketball vocabulary. The students are also learning and participating in some basic drills that support both offense and defense in basketball. We also completed our annual Hula Hoop/Jump Rope competition. The results of the contest are below.
Upcoming: Once basketball is over, we will have our much-anticipated gymnastics unit. I could really use an extra pair of eyes for this unit–especailly in Kinder and 1st grade. If you are available and have a background check, I could really use the help during your child' s PE class.
Announcement: Our third annual jump rope/hula hoop extravaganza has taken place and the winners are as follows:
HULA HOOP
3rd place-Bronze Medal–Zoe Wagner
2nd place-Silver Medal–Ariana Journey
1st Place Gold Medal–Emery Simpson
Jump Rope
3rd place-Bronze Medal–Ava Bo Bearquiver
2nd place-Silver Medal–Paisley Metge
1st Place Gold Medal–Evertt Kern
My goal is that students can participate fully and safely during PE class, so it is important that your child wears appropriate footwear to PE for the remainder of the year. Please help me by learning what colored day your child’s PE class is and encourage him or her to wear good shoes. Thank you, families, for your help with this. As always, please send any questions or concerns my way. This year continues to be spectacular!
November
Hello Families,
Happy Fall! This is my favorite time of the year. I enjoy the cooler weather, pretty fall colors, the smell of green chili roasting, and, of course, football season! As usual, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Update: We will be wrapping up our Making Healthy Choices unit. During this time, your child learned the benefits of yoga. We also discussed basic healthy choices that support a healthy lifestyle. We also learned about the importance of taking care of our teeth. We will also be having our annual Jump Rope/Hula Hoop competition in late October and early November.
Upcoming: The month of November will be our basketball unit. I plan to motivate the kids to sign up for our basketball league.
Announcement: SABA Basketball is back! If you’re interested in having your child play basketball, keep your eyes and ears open for information about our SABA basketball league.
I hope that students can participate fully and safely during PE class, so your child must wear appropriate footwear to PE for the remainder of the year. Please help me by learning what colored day your child’s PE class is and encourage him or her to wear good shoes. Thank you, families, for your help with this.
October
It has been a wonderful start to a new school year. Congratulations to Mrs. Carver’s class for being the first class to score a touchdown and be rewarded with their choice of PE activities for the day! I’m predicting a serious game of dodgeball in my near future!
Update: The 3rd-5th graders started the year with a soccer unit, and kinder-2nd has been focusing on locomotor skills as well as ball-handling skills. Students in grades 2nd-5th have also had the opportunity to learn and play Disc Golf. Each student has also completed their ½ or 1 mile run. We are now in the process of completing make-up runs and plotting our data.
Upcoming: Every student will participate in two units this month. We will start with yoga and follow that up with the healthy choices unit. I’m also planning to have the annual hula-hoop and jump rope competition for 3rd-5th graders. All grades will practice, but only 3rd-5th will compete.
Announcement: My hope is that students can participate fully and safely in PE class, so it is important that your child wears appropriate footwear to PE. It would be greatly appreciated if you help your child remember what color of the day he or she has PE. Thank you, families, for your help with this. As always, please send any questions, or concerns my way.
Aug/Sep

Welcome Back! My name is Coach Harrison and I am looking forward to a great year. I hope everyone had a great and memorable summer break. This year is packed with some wonderful and exciting units.
Update: This year I’m starting something new. I will implement a class “incentive” reward system. During PE, each class will have the opportunity to earn 15 yards. Once the class gets a touchdown, they will earn a free time PE class. Each class will be evaluated in four different areas:
- Sportsmanship = 2.5 yards
- Participation/attitude = 2.5 yards
- Use of time/clean up = 2.5 yards
- Respect = 2.5 yards
If a class receives all ten points (yards)–they will get a first down and an additional 5 yard bonus. If a class doesn’t receive any yards–they will receive a 5 yard penalty. Once a class gets a touchdown, they will vote on what the class would like to do for their free time PE class.
As always, if I have an independent behavior issue with your child I will be in contact with you. Thank you for your support.
Upcoming: Our first unit will be soccer. All kids will learn basic vocabulary, and have the opportunity to practice some skills. Older kids will also have the opportunity to scrimmage while the littles continue to practice basic ball handling skills.
Announcement: If you would like to volunteer during your child' s PE class, please reach out and we can arrange something.
My hope is that students can participate fully and safely in PE class, so it is important that your child wears appropriate footwear to PE, so it would be greatly appreciated if you help your child remember what color of the day he or she has PE.
